Melanophore-dispersing Effect of Barbiturate in Frogs

Abstract
The effect of barbiturates on the endocrine system in animals and man has been extensively studied. Here we wish to report in the stimulating effet of barbiturate on melanophore dispersion in frogs.
Thiopental, pentobarbitalm or amobarbital injected into the thoracic lymph sac of frogs at the dose leves of 0.1-0.5mg per 10g of body weight was shown to provoke melanophore-dispersion inthe skin as well as to induce anesthesia. After hypophysectomy thiopental induced melanophore disperion did not occueered. Following administration of hydrocortisone or epinephrine again failed to show the melanophore dispersion in frogs. Benzyl-allyl thiobarbituric acid was shown a convulsion and a slight melanophore expansion of frog skin.
Thiobarbituric acid and thiourea did not cause any change of skin color or behavior in frogs. The injection of pituitary extract or ACTH produced a marked expansion of the melanophores of the frogs.
